Josh.ai Says Home AI Must Answer to the Homeowner, and Lays Out How It Would Enforce That

Josh.ai says the smart home industry now faces a question it cannot answer with better features alone: how to make homes more intelligent while keeping the people who live in them in control. According to the company, that question was central to the Consumer Technology Association's Smart Home Retreat, held October 7-8, 2026, at the ProSource Experience Center in Golden, Colorado, where executives and technology leaders discussed connected living, interoperability, AI-driven experiences and residential energy management.

Josh.ai says its CEO Alex Capecelatro took part in the event's CEO Fireside Chat, sharing the company's perspective on the evolving smart home landscape and the role artificial intelligence plays in it. According to Josh.ai, the appearance came at a pivotal moment, with the company's recently published Code of Conduct for AI in the Home offering a framework for how increasingly capable AI should operate in residential spaces.

Josh.ai says the industry is moving past connecting individual devices toward cohesive experiences in which technology works together intelligently. According to the company, that opens the door to systems that understand intent, interpret context and coordinate many technologies at once, and Josh.ai says its own approach builds on a decade of developing purpose-built artificial intelligence for residential control rather than treating AI as an isolated voice assistant or an extra layer on top of existing products.

Josh.ai says the distinction matters more as AI moves from answering questions to influencing the physical environment. According to the company, adjusting lighting or temperature is one thing, while interacting with access control, security systems and other consequential parts of a home introduces a different level of responsibility, and Josh.ai says realizing the opportunity requires thoughtful engineering, clear boundaries and a system designed to put homeowners first.

Josh.ai says responsible AI implementation has to be addressed at the architectural level rather than left to product policies or user settings. According to the company, intelligence should interpret requests and determine useful responses while a dedicated control system enforces household permissions and decides which actions are allowed, so a home becomes more intelligent without becoming less predictable, less private or harder for its owners to manage.

Josh.ai says its Code of Conduct for AI in the Home outlines twelve principles for the responsible development and deployment of AI in residential environments, and that the company published it as both a commitment to its own work and an invitation to manufacturers, platforms, integrators and other stakeholders. According to Josh.ai, the framework calls for human control without friction, clear authorization in which AI never grants itself additional authority, privacy and security by design, accountability and reversibility, and resilient home control with local operation wherever practical.

Josh.ai says the defining idea in that code is the separation of intelligence from authority: the AI can interpret intent, reason through a request and suggest an action, but it should not independently control devices. According to the company, every physical action must pass through a control system that evaluates the request against household permissions and safeguards, and Josh.ai says it published the principles as a voluntary framework and is encouraging others to adopt, challenge and strengthen them as technology and regulation evolve.
