Few gadgets have had a louder debut or a rockier first year than rabbit's r1. Its maker has kept rebuilding the software, and the device now serves as a physical way into rabbit OS3, a conversational system for working with the models, skills and computers its owner picks, with memory and context carried across tasks.
The price stays at $199 with no subscription. Rabbit lists unlimited AI conversations, translation, on-device recordings with free transcripts and AI summaries, and a creations feature that turns a described tool or game into a custom vibe-coded app that runs on r1.
The hardware remains the teenage engineering collaboration that made r1 instantly recognizable, a retro-futurist design rooted in a decade of friendship between rabbit founder Jesse Lyu and teenage engineering founder Jesper Kouthoofd.
Rabbit says r1 ships in three business days with 30-day free returns. For a category still searching for its killer use, a dedicated always-ready AI handset with no monthly fee is an increasingly interesting bet.
