Both Apple desktops run AI models locally, but they target very different workloads.
Mac mini (M6 or M5 Pro). Five inches square, with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, faster unified memory, 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7. Apple pitches it for running your own agentic workflows. It suits small and mid-size models and always-on assistants.
Mac Studio (M5 Max or M5 Ultra). M5 Max tops out at 128GB and 614GB/s; M5 Ultra reaches a 32-core Neural Engine and up to 512GB at 1.2TB/s. Apple claims up to 10.7 times the AI performance of M1 Max for M5 Max.
Rule of thumb: buy the mini to run agents and everyday models; buy the Studio when the model is too big to fit anywhere else.
