Waymo's driverless service is crossing the Atlantic. The company says it is laying the groundwork for fully autonomous ride-hailing in Spain, starting with the Region of Madrid, and aims to carry its first riders there in 2027.
Electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles will begin appearing on local roads within days. Waymo describes a phased plan: manual driving first, then technical validation with trained autonomous specialists behind the wheel, so the Waymo Driver can adapt to the region's traffic and road conditions. The company says it has completed more than 20 million trips and serves hundreds of thousands of commercial rides each week.
"Madrid is an incredible capital of innovation and an integral part of our growing global presence. We can’t wait to serve Madrileños," said co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana.
The timing is notable: Waymo will be telling its expansion story on the CES keynote stage in January.
