Canada is next on Waymo's map. The company is preparing a fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Toronto and is investing in local facilities and jobs, with a goal of welcoming its first riders in 2028.
Vehicles will begin driving manually in the city soon, starting with high-definition mapping and testing with trained specialists aboard. Toronto-headquartered Element Fleet Management will handle end-to-end fleet management, and the partners plan to add hundreds of roles over time in maintenance, validation driving and customer service.
"Expanding into Canada marks an important milestone in Waymo’s global journey," said co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana.
Winter will be the real exam. Toronto's snow and ice are exactly the conditions skeptics say autonomous systems still need to master.
