AMD Introduces Helion, an Open Rack Blueprint for Agentic AI Compute
The OCP spec-based rack design lets customers mix CPU-only and CPU/GPU configurations, with a 6th Gen EPYC CPU-only rack supporting up to 32,768 cores and availability planned for November 2026. AMD says it has introduced the AMD Helion agentic AI rack, which it describes as an open blueprint for agentic AI infrastructure based on an Open Compute Project spec design and powered by AMD compute. In a press release on its own investor relations site, the Santa Clara company says Helion builds on the open-platform approach of the AMD Helios rackscale solution and is designed to give partners and customers the flexibility they need for agentic AI infrastructure, matching CPU performance, core density and power with GPU acceleration for the work their AI agents perform.
Dan McNamara, senior vice president and general manager of Compute and Enterprise AI at AMD, is quoted in the release saying that agentic AI is not a single workload and spans personal agents, enterprise applications, code execution and complex workflows, each with different compute requirements. AMD says that is why the rack pairs EPYC performance, open software and flexible rack designs so partners can build systems around customer needs and make efficient use of available power.
AMD says the OCP spec-based rack blueprint supports open software and can come in flexible configurations, including liquid- and air-cooled versions, allowing customers to create what AMD calls virtually any configuration needed for their needs. The company gives two examples: a CPU-only rack powered by 6th Gen AMD EPYC processors that AMD says can support up to 32,768 CPU cores, designed for hyperscale customers with dedicated capacity for agent execution and connections to separate model inference infrastructure; and an all-in-one rack that combines AMD EPYC CPU nodes, AMD Instinct MI350P GPU nodes and general-purpose compute on one platform, which AMD says is designed to give partners and customers an all-in-one concept for enterprise agentic AI.
The release frames Helion as a way to deploy agentic AI in the IT infrastructure customers already have, turning existing investments into a foundation for new AI capabilities. AMD says partners can tailor CPU and GPU configurations to customer workloads, matching agent execution, model inference and supporting compute to each deployment's performance, power and cost requirements. The company also says it plans to contribute the AMD Helion specification to OCP, making it available to the community for further development and adoption.
AMD says Helion agentic rack configurations are currently under development with ecosystem partners and are planned to be available in November 2026. The release carries a long list of partner statements on its own site: Cisco, Dell Technologies, Hon Hai Technology Group, HPE, Lenovo, QCT, Supermicro and Wiwynn each describe how they plan to build on the Helion reference design, with Supermicro saying it will bring the open, ORv3-compliant rack-scale architecture to market through its Data Center Building Block Solutions.
